The standard Fuelcone was developed in the RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) wind tunnel in the 1980’s and is still the most aerodynamic body mounted aerodynamic device in the world. Yes, Australian designed and manufactured and yet another example of an ‘Aussie’ being the best! Of particular interest is the roots of Fuelcone’s designs; Acknowledging that “Nosecone®” works, RMIT went about developing a cone type device that was more aerodynamically effective the Nosecone® – “Fuelcone” is the result.
The main reasons for the improved performance are:
- Increased radius to leading edges at side and top of the Fuelcone. (nb. This feature is also included in Fuelcone extenders, ensuring that all exposed edges at the front of a van body or trailer are the most aerodynamically efficient).
- Flat base ensuring the design of products does not deflect airflow down behind the truck cabs. (nb. At the time of testing this was an important consideration, but now that truck cabs designs have improved aerodynamically it has become even more critical as the airflow is now more likely to follow the cab roof lines.)
Fuelcone is all about maximum performance and it mounts down the sides of the front corners of a van body or trailer. Therefore having a overall width of 2500mm fuelcone may not fit straight onto some curtain-sided or narrower bodies, and as it is 550mm deep for rigid applications in particular consideration to clearances and design is recommended.
Fuelcone Slim was developed as a result of product application decisions being made by truck body builder based on ease of fitment rather than maximizing of aerodynamic efficiency. While being inferior in its aerodynamic efficiency to that of Fuelcone, Fuelcone Slim will out perform other cone designs, principally because like Fuelcone, Fuelcone Slim has a flat base and does not deflecting the airflow down behind the cab. At 300mm deep Fuelcone Slim allows tighter margins for gap between front of body and rear of truck cab.
Both Fuelcone and Fuelcone Slim each have a flat reinforcing ridge vertically up the center enabling easy application of corporate signage. Both are manufactured in brilliant white and do not require painting. Fuel savings of 6 to 12 per cent should be anticipated with Fuelcone Slim and the results from the standard Fuelcone are well in excess of this, have been achieved. Tests replacing nosecone with Fuelcone have provided the operators up to 10 percent extra fuel saving.
Fuelcone Rigid Bodies
